A slam dunk for three of our hot shots!
And the good news keeps coming from our young
Following a grueling day of trials in Winchester on the weekend, three players
from Oxfordshire Basketball U11s team dribbled, passed and shot their way into
the Southern England regional team.
Competing against the best players from across southern England, three of our
hot shots – Liv and Ahriya (Oxford Hoops) and LK Mahalingham (Abingdon Eagles) - made
the biggest of impressions on the panel of coaches.
They will now start team training, and then represent England South U11s against the best players in the country at national
tournament in June.
"The competition for
places was fierce, and this is a remarkable achievement,” says team coach.
"LK, Olivia and Ahriya have been selected as part of the top ten young
basketball players (10 girls and 10 boys) in the four counties of Oxfordshire,
Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Hampshire.”
Our MD, Nick, says
that the trio will have thoroughly deserved their places in the regional squad.
"I was speaking with Shiv, and he talked me through all the qualities that the
judges would have been looking for, and it was pretty exhaustive,” he says.
"Every person at the trial was there because of their fundamental basketball
skills – such as defensive positions, ability to move off either foot, court
awareness, passing, and shooting.
"But to make the final squad, they would have displayed something more:
"Liv, Ahriya and LK have made it because they impressed the judges with their fantastic
attitude and hunger for the game.
"Character is everything. If you have it – whether you’re a young basketball
player or a candidate on our books - you will stand out from the pack.”
We’ve been so proud to sponsor the Oxfordshire team’s kit this season, and wish
our three stars the best of luck for the national tournament.
