Starting a career in childcare is often less formal than people expect. Many nursery assistants and early years practitioners don’t begin with a perfect CV or years of experience – they start by stepping into real nursery settings and learning on the job.

That’s why early years agency work is one of the most common entry routes into childcare in the UK. It gives people immediate access to nursery environments, allowing them to build experience, confidence, and understanding of early years practice from day one.

Instead of committing straight into a permanent role, agency work allows you to try different nurseries, different teams, and different approaches to childcare. Some settings are structured and fast-paced, others are more play-led and community focused. This variety helps people quickly understand where they fit best.

Typical roles include nursery assistant, nursery nurse, and early years practitioner positions, all supporting children aged 0–5 through play, learning, and daily routines.

For many people, this is also the point where childcare stops feeling like a “job they’re trying” and becomes a long-term career path.

You’ll usually need an enhanced DBS (child workforce) and safeguarding awareness, but experience is not always essential – attitude and willingness to learn matter just as much.
